Dungeons. Each time you complete a path of a dungeon you gain 70% of the experience needed to get to your next level. So, since you're level 40, that's 6 paths a day, 420%, so 4 levels minimum (I know there's more complicated maths to it due to increasing levels, but I really couldn't be bothered).
I've played ranger for most of the game now, close to 1400 hours over 2 characters (yes, I have two rangers, both 80, both geared) across all aspects of the game (PvE, WvW, PvP). From 60-70 I would do blazeridge steppes and craft as much as possible because leveling at this point does take a bit longer (or so it seems). As for 70-80, just go to Orr and do some of the DEs and do your personal quest as much as possible as it yields a good amount of experience.
That said, when you reach level 80 it's up to you to decide what you want to do. Map completion, leveling alts, playing dungeons, playing fractals of the mists, playing raids (this one might be difficult without proper knowledge and equipment), playing meta events on level 80 maps, doing World Boss trains, PvP, WvW, crafting legendaries

I am at the final chapter of the main story in Orr and I have noticed that I keep dying regardless of character. I have a lvl 80 elementalist - condition build, lvl 80 warrior - berserker build.
PvP can be played starting at level 2 because all players are scaled to level 80. PvP uses different gear that is provided for free by the game through the hero panel. There are two game modes.
